We all like to save a bit of cash here and there – and one easy way is to make some small, easy changes to bring down your utility bills. No need to sacrifice the sports or movie channels just yet!

Freebie Changes

thermostatThe easiest changes are the changes you can make for free! And if we’re totally honest with ourselves, they’re all things we all know we should be doing, but probably don’t (I know I’m guilty of a few):

Don’t do half-loads!
In other words, when you use your washing machine, dryer or dishwasher, make sure you use a full load. It’s far more energy-efficient. And if you can, use your washing line to dry your laundry instead of your dryer, it can be quite a costly appliance!

Watch the water usage
Instead of running the bath, take a shower instead, and if you’re making a brew for just one or two people, don’t fill the kettle. Boil only what you need.

Defrost the fridge and freezer
I know, it’s a massive chore and probably one of the least enjoyable jobs in the home. However, it’s a necessary evil to keep your appliance in good working order (and to ensure it uses less energy to function).

Switch energy providers
This is also seen by many as a pain, but it’s become so much easier to do in recent years. Thanks to the many comparison sites we have at our fingertips, and the majority of companies who will do all the hard work for you, all you need to do is see where you can get the best deal for your needs and switch. Simples!

Keep on top of your meter readings
Don’t just assume your energy bill ‘estimate’ is correct – it probably isn’t. Check your meter and give your energy provider the reading regularly to ensure you don’t end up massively overpaying each month.

Use a thermostat
If you use a thermostat you can keep the temperature in your home at the correct level for you. MYTHBUSTER – Keeping your central heating on low all the time is NOT cheaper than switching it on only when you need it!

Switch off the Sky box when it’s not in use!
Unless you really need to record that TV show at 2am, you can switch off at the plug. The same goes for other electronics that usually remain on ‘standby’ all night long.

Small Costs

So now we’ve got the freebie changes out of the way, you could save more by making a few small purchases, such as:

  • Reflector panels to fit behind your radiators
  • Switch to energy-saving lightbulbs
  • Add linings to your curtains
  • Insulate your hot water tank if you have one
  • Draught-proof your home using insulation tape
  • Fix any dripping taps (this will be free if you’re a competent DIY-er!)

Insulate your home

Finally, the biggest expenditure but probably (definitely) the best investment you can make, is to ensure your home is well insulated.

Double (or triple) glaze your windows
Or simply upgrade if your windows aren’t as energy-efficient as you’d like.

Upgrade your external doors
The Window Company offer an extensive (and stylish) range of doors which can improve the energy-efficiency of your home.

Insulate your home
Not just in your loft or in your wall cavities… if you’re in an older house you can insulate beneath your floorboards too.
