On first consideration, you probably thought choosing your new front door was going to be pretty straightforward, but finding a door that suits your spec, budget and safety regulations usually results in a battle of compromises.

1. Price

Although having a budget in mind is a good idea, focussing your efforts based solely on price is never the place to start.

Focus on quality before anything else. A cheap front door is all well and good but it’ll always turn out to be a false economy – essentially you’re paying for low quality materials, insulation and security.

2. Design

The majority of people are completely free to choose the design of their new door but should bear in mind the age of their property and try to choose something in keeping with this period.

If you live in a listed building or a conservation area, however, you’re likely to have your options limited but the majority of quality door specialists will still be able to help you out.

One of the most popular front door designs in the UK is the classic Victorian-style, four panel door – two glass panels and the top and two solid panels at the bottom. Not to worry if this isn’t the design for you though, there are loads of traditional and modern styles to choose from so you’re guaranteed to find something you love.

3. Material

For busy lifestyles low maintenance is key so a composite door will give you the finished look off wood without any of the hassle. For a more modern look, steel and aluminium doors are also popular choices.

If a little maintenance is no problem then solid timber doors are great if insulation is a priority. The main concern with a timber door is obviously their strength against water damage, but if treated regularly you shouldn’t find any problems. Just a tip, microporous paints will offer some of the best waterproofing protection.

4. Security

Composite doors are a great choice here too. With numerous brands available you’ve got a choice of materials but there’s a guarantee that unites them all - they’re strong, resilient and durable.

Although you no longer hear of people picking locks – this is no longer the standard break-in procedure, after all – this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be protecting yourself against it. When choosing a lock, to cover all bases you need to make sure it’s anti-pick, anti-snap, anti-drill and anti-bump too!

5. Size

The mistake the majority of people make when deciding on a front door is thinking that they’re all the same size, they’re not. Do your research and measure to make sure you choose the right style and the right size.

Remember, it’s not just the size of the physical door you need to consider, the internal floor height and the width of the door should also make their way into your plans – you don’t want to find yourself unable to manoeuvre around the door after its been fitted.
